Jockeying their way through…

Hallo, folks! With the explosion of groovy cafes, cocktail lounges and clubhouses in Chennai, clinched by a burgeoning disco culture, we’re waltzing up a tempestuous storm in the entertainment circles! Here’s a repertoire of debonair jockeys, who’re engulfed in a swirling mist of colourful, exciting activities that await them…

Wayne…

This jaunty national DJ icon joined the elite ranks of HFO (where he’s currently working) after a brief two-year stint in EC-41. And here’s the icing on that scrumptious cake – Wayne was a resident DJ in Colombo in the swanky disco joint, My Kind of Place, last year! In fact, he’s just back from a spicy tour around Delhi, Bombay, Pune, Kolkatta and Bangalore. An active member of the Mixed Masters band, consisting of Sunjay Dutta (from Kolkatta), Jazze Joe (from Delhi) and Teja (from Hyderabad), Wayne longs to establish a training school for young DJ aspirants. So keep your eyes peeled for one, honeys!

George…

Presently working in ITC Park Sheraton, George gears us up with a wide spectrum of pieces ranging from funky, retro-style items to music commercials in that ingenious mind, catering to the most fervent wishes of the junta. He plays more commonly for corporate events. He’s quick to point out that hip-hop music is becoming a sensational preference among the youth populations, countrywide. “Besides your attitude, presentation, confidence and the image you project, you need to keep working on different equipment and continue practicing and polishing your styles to enhance your creativity,” Geogre advises, with a cutely boyish grin. And here’s a matter for pride – Park Sheraton boasts of sleek, sophisticated controllers and programmed lighting systems, which make for the best lighting in the entire country!

Arun…

Commonly known to the world as Chubby, this cherubic maestro is currently igniting sparks in Sparks and setting the dancing floors ablaze with his breathtaking performances in select parties. While he dotes on Technics Turntable record players,

Denon and Pioneer are his best CD-player-buddies. “Most youngsters are entirely taken in by the media hype though,” he proclaims. “As a result, anonymous tracks just don’t sell as easily as the popular ones, even though they may be really good. The youth should be enterprising enough to get down to listening to new, different songs.” So, what’s he decided for the future? Well, he hopes to embark on the thrill of delving into Technics Turntable and cut his own album!

“A fine knowledge of music and dedication to your profession is really all that it takes to be a roaring DJ!”

Rohit…

He works at Dublin and he’s unimaginably crazy about rock music and high-energy music. “Especially dynamic music, which would galvanize people to hit the deck and jig their way to the nearest disco!” he laughs. Rohit is keen to play a role in improving the levels of awareness of discoing and DJ-ing, as a career option among the Chennaities.

“Chennai needs to catch up with Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore in the disco and coffee-culture specialty-zones,” he opines. “Every week, a maximum number of 3000 people waltz into disco clubs in Chennai. In contrast, Bombay has 1000-1500 enthusiasts from one club alone! Just imagine the strength of partygoers in the city! And Bangalore Times has allotted an entire column on DJs! Being a DJ is substantially more lucrative in Delhi, Bombay and Bangalore – and music outsourcing is one of their USPs too,” Rohit adds earnestly. “Disco joints are the most frequently visited hotspots and chill-out zones in these cities. In contrast, hitting a disco is still like an outing for most Chennaities!”

Well, don’t worry Rohit – it’s gonna be on the ball soon!

Rudy…

Sleek, suave and classy would serve as perfect adjectives for describing the likes of our wondrous, young virtuoso of Leather Bar and HFO. That’s not all! He’s the life and soul of several private parties he freelances for. A typical public-relations guy, Rudy loves making friends, striking new acquaintances, developing fresh contacts, going places and expanding his horizons. “Chennai promises a bright future for DJs,” he states with conviction. “Many more bars, pubs and clubs have sprung up than ever before!”

Rudy opts for any kind of music lying within the ambit of R&D, hip-hop, lounge and pieces from the 1960s too! “A good ear for music would do wonders in this field,” he beams. And here’s what takes the cake – the gig he put up in EC-41 on 15th November set the Thames on fire!
